CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin presided over a pared-back Victory Day parade Thursday, showcasing his country’s unity and resolve to continue the war on Ukraine. But since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the massive military parade has been somewhat downsized. “The fate of the motherland, its future depends on each of us … We celebrate Victory Day in the context of the special military operation. All of Russia is with you!”But this year’s Victory Day is also happening against the background of a bribery scandal roiling Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Under Putin, Victory Day has assumed greater importance in national life.

As the subjects of a preliminary investigation, neither Arnault nor Sarkisov are suspects and neither has been accused of wrongdoing. The investigation, apparently ongoing, will not fail to prove this.”“Besides, who can seriously imagine that Mr Bernard Arnault, who has built the leading French and European company over 40 years, would engage money laundering to expand a hotel?” Laffont added. CNN has contacted Tracfin and Sarkisov for comment. LVMH is once again Europe’s biggest company by market capitalization, after being briefly dethroned last month by Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk (NVO). Arnault’s company encompasses luxury fashion and drinks brands such as Louis Vuitton and Moet & Chandon.

Billionaire LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault has hit back at allegations of money laundering, after the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed it is investigating financial transactions between Arnault and Russian oligarch Nikolai Sarkisov. In a statement, Arnault's attorney, Jacqueline Laffont, said the allegations were "absurd and unfounded." The investigation, seemingly under way, will demonstrate these facts," she said in an emailed statement over the weekend. "Furthermore, who could seriously imagine that Bernard Arnault, who has developed over the past 40 years the leading French and European company, would pursue money laundering to expand a hotel? I believe the senseless nature of these allegations will be recognized by all."

Officials alleged that Arnault paid Sarkisov about €20 million to own the assets. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Paris public prosecutor's office said Friday that it is investigating billionaire LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault's dealings with Russian businessman Nikolai Sarkisov, according to multiple media reports. French daily newspaper Le Monde reported that officials are looking specifically into real estate transactions between the two individuals in the ski resort of Courchevel. In 2018, Le Monde said, Sarkisov purchased multiple properties in Courchevel using intermediary companies. Investigators told Le Monde that the transactions look like they masked the origin of the funds, and who the ultimate buyer actually was.

What was a 10-second gap two days ago is now an unbridgeable 7:35 gap after Pogacar huffed and puffed over the line more than five minutes behind Jumbo-Visma leader Vingegaard. "I'm relieved to have more than seven minutes but we're not in Paris yet, there's some tricky stages left, still," said Vingegaard. Vingegaard slowed down and zig-zagged through to continue his demolition work until the line, which he crossed with a big smile on his face. Also why do they let cars pass us when the gap between the groups of riders is just 15 seconds?"

France's 2022 Olympic slalom champion Clement Noel was fourth, missing a medal by 0.03 seconds. I’ve done both plenty of times, but the finish is worse because you’ve done your run, and you can’t change anything," said the 2019 giant slalom gold medallist. "I won most things in slalom except Olympic gold and world championship gold. He was also second in a World Cup slalom in Chamonix on Feb. 4, a first World Cup podium for his country. "He went to chase his dream for Greece after so many injuries and he never let go.

Feb 13 (Reuters) - International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said his organisation is not on the wrong side of history after opening the door for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in next year's Summer Games in Paris. Athletes from Russia and its neighbour Belarus have been banned from many international competitions in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine a year ago. In a letter to Bach last week, Ukrainian athletes said the IOC was "on the wrong side of history" after Bach had urged Ukraine to drop threats of a boycott. When asked if the IOC was on the wrong side of history, Bach told reporters on Sunday: "No, history will show who is doing more for peace. Bach, speaking at the Alpine skiing world championships in Courchevel, France, said the IOC stood in "solidarity" with Ukraine's athletes.

COURCHEVEL, France, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Canada's James Crawford won the men's super-G by the slimmest of margins in a stunning upset at the Alpine skiing world championships on Thursday. Switzerland's World Cup overall leader Marco Odermatt was fourth and surprisingly out of the medals on a course set by the Swiss coach. The 25-year-old is the first Canadian super-G world champion since Erik Guay in St Moritz in 2017. Austria's 2021 super-G champion Vincent Kriechmayr finished 12th. Italy's Dominik Paris, the 2019 super-G world champion, crashed heavily at speed after pushing too aggressively and catching a ski edge on a gate.

Feb 8 (Reuters) - Italy's Marta Bassino edged out American Mikaela Shiffrin to win the women's Super-G gold at the World Ski Championships in Courchevel, France, on Wednesday, winning the title by 0.11 seconds. Bassino has six World Cup gold medals to her name in the giant slalom but had never topped the podium in any other World Cup event. However, she did win gold in the parallel giant slalom at the 2021 World Ski Championships. Bassino is the second Italian to win a gold medal at this year's championships after Federica Brignone won the women's combined event on Monday. Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami, the defending champion and one of the pre-race favourites with 18 Super-G World Cup victories, could only manage sixth placed.
Unstoppable Shiffrin extends her record to 84 wins

Shiffrin, 27, is now only two wins short of the absolute record of 86 wins racked up by Swedish men's slalom great Ingemar Stenmark in the 1970s and 1980s. The victory took Shiffrin's career World Cup giant slalom tally to 19 wins, one short of retired Swiss great Vreni Schneider's women's record of 20 in the discipline. A fifth large crystal globe for the overall World Cup winner also looks inevitable, with Shiffrin now on 1,517 points to Swiss rival Lara Gut-Behrami's 906. She had explained after Wednesday's first leg that breaking the record had made it hard to switch off. "This season I was thinking if I could get four wins, five wins, maybe six, then that's the most I could possibly get.
A Ukrainian oligarch was arrested in a French ski resort, Ukrainian law enforcement said Wednesday. French law enforcement detained Konstantin Zhevago in a hotel in the famed alpine ski resort of Courchevel on Tuesday, the agency said in a statement. An DBR spokesperson said French police made the arrest after Ukraine asked for it, Interfax reported. Zhevago is a former Ukrainian MP and used to have a major stake in the liquidated Finance & Credit Bank in Ukraine. The agency said that a vast swathe of Zhevago's assets had been seized, including shares worth of millions of dollars and dozens of properties.
Zhevago was arrested on Tuesday evening at the Courchevel ski resort in the French Alps, the official said, adding that Ukraine sought the businessman's extradition. The 48-year-old will appear before the appeals court of Chambery in southeastern France on Jan. 5, the official said. Ferrexpo, whose shares fell around 5% on the news of its controlling shareholder's arrest, did not respond to an emailed request for comment. The company had a market capitalisation of just above 1 billion pounds ($1.20 billion) as of Wednesday. In 2021 Ukraine's DBR reported that Zhevago had been put on an international wanted list in connection with the investigation into Finance & Credit Bank, which the former lawmaker had indirectly controlled.
